McCarthy, Senior Lecturer in Management, and her business co-founder, Anne Touboulic, are no brokers of romantic partners, however.

Their “matchmaking” service is the Circular Agriculture Hub. This not-for-profit start-up – set to launch formally in 2024 – pairs farmers up with a broad range of community-based customers that include food banks, small food producers, social supermarkets and other users, offering an alternative set of buyers to the big supermarkets.

McCarthy and Touboulic have spent their academic careers questioning the increasingly devastating impact of the food industry on the environment, consumers and farmers. The Circular Agriculture Hub is the pair’s response to a deeply troubling picture in food supply chains.

Food system change is happening. The way in which we organise the relationships and activities that get food from the field to the plate this change is happening. Knowing the direction to take can be difficult, especially when there are so many potential avenues to pursue. To support change there are a range of organisations that provide support, direction and advice to actors involved in the food system. Here we take stock of some of those actors and the functions they perform.

Our work has brought us to engage with many different individuals and groups working on various aspects of the food system from the farmers that plant and grow food crops, grower cooperatives that market produce to wholesale, to consumers that purchase food from large retail, or local groups coordinating famers markets.

Having oversight and an understanding of who is doing what, where and how is critical in joining forces and building momentum for real change. Joining approaches can open up opportunities to leveraging collective resources and learnings and share best practice and much more. In this resource we share a snapshot of organisations engaged in food system transformation. We also highlight the different forms this engagement can take from action & implementation to guidance & advice, and the scale of actions from individual to collective. As this is a snapshot it it important to recognise that this is not an exhaustive list and there may in fact be many more organisations working towards food system change. We would love to hear from you if you spot any areas to include further organisations.

Forexample, take the ways in which our supplychains are structured which can range fromextended global supply chains whereby foodis produced in one location and is passedfrom supplier to supplier before reachingthe final consumer. At the same time thereexist localised networks of smaller-scalegrowing and food production where labourand food is shared. And then there’severything in between. Food is essential forlife, food has cultural significance, food iscomplex.
